Heavy drinking or high intensity alcohol use is the leading risk to health and well-being in young people, accounting for 7% of disability adjusted life years in 10–24-year olds globally (Gore et al., 2011). Short-term implications, which pose the greater immediate threat to health and well-being, include accidents, violence and assaults, early and unprotected sex, exacerbation of mental health problems, and poor school attendance and educational attainment (Witt, 2010).
