Four years ago, Dubai joined the global zeitgeist and sold parents on the metaverse as the future of education. This summer, the federal government banned children from using social media altogether. In mid-June, the UAE Cabinet issued Resolution No 106 of 2026, prohibiting under-15s from creating or holding personal social media accounts and restricting 15- and 16-year-olds to age-appropriate access. Platforms have 12 months to comply or face penalties including fines and suspension.

The signature of customer service in the Gulf has long been abundance. More staff, more receptionists, more attendants, and volume as a proxy for quality. But artificial intelligence can now handle routine enquiries at least as competently as many humans. The competitive advantage gained from deploying additional headcount is eroding. Increasingly, people are bypassing websites and even traditional search results, relying instead on AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Google, Siri and social platforms. In the GCC, where digital adoption is high and consumers tend to embrace new platforms quickly, this shift may happen faster than in many Western markets. The question is whether regional brands are prepared.
