Lydia X. Z. Brown is a disability justice advocate, organizer, and writer whose work has largely focused on violence against multiply-marginalized disabled people, especially institutionalization, incarceration, and policing. They are currently a Justice Catalyst Fellow at the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law, providing legal representation and self-advocacy education to Maryland students with disabilities facing school pushout, disproportionate discipline, and criminalization. What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I am most proud of my work on the Judge Rotenberg Center, knowing that I am contributing to a rich tapestry of community reporting.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That stories about disability need to be heartwarming, inspirational, or sad. Our stories are vibrant, powerful, fierce, and complex.
