Stewi — Hanging up the washing in style

Stewi advert from the 1950s. Stewi Walter Steiner from Winterthur invented the Stewi in 1947. What started out as a folding rotary clothes line was to become a design classic that graced Swiss gardens for decades. The description in patent application number 255080 filed on 30 July 1947, and which runs to three pages, is highly technical: “The invention relates to an apparatus for the hanging of laundry.

Für Johann Heinrich Füssli (1741 bis 1825) blieb das Historienbild die höchste aller Gattungen. Der in Rom zum Maler ausgebildete Künstler, der sich 1780 in London niederließ, hat ihr allerdings neues Leben eingehaucht. Den Ausgangspunkt dazu bildeten seine Studien der Literatur, namentlich der englischen. Zwei Autoren stehen für Füssli im Zentrum: William Shakespeare und John Milton.
