During Covid, our lead singer Tom Turner used to go for long walks and would often trek to a particular spot to sit and read. One day, a man stopped and struck up a conversation. Looking back, it was probably a time when any interaction outside your immediate bubble felt valuable. From what Tom remembers, the man’s attitude towards the world and his own sense of importance within it really irritated him. That encounter stayed with Tom until he eventually wrote the song.

Some debut albums capture an artist in the act of becoming. Reasonable Doubt sounds as though the becoming happened before the tape began rolling. Released on June 25, 1996, through Roc-A-Fella Records in partnership with Priority, Jay-Z’s first album introduced a 26-year-old rapper who already appeared to understand his voice, his subject and the image through which both would be delivered. He did not sound like an eager newcomer asking hip-hop to recognise his potential.
