I was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and came of age at the height of the preppy craze. For some unfathomable reason, my grandparents had a subscription to The New Yorker. Every week, I’d paw through it, daydreaming of a glamorous future in which I’d be a celebrated stage actress, living in sin with some hot, devoted trumpet player in a Greenwich Village loft with a skyline view I’ve since learned is possible only from downtown Brooklyn or the western shores…

What was your first job as a journalist?

I reviewed books for New City in Chicago, where I was also the receptionist. I put Art Spiegelman on hold for 5 minutes, to my everlasting s.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. Like many of my vintage, I received a portable model as a present for high school graduation.

Jackie Harvey, The Onion's Outside Scoop columnist

Established in 1996, the Firecracker Alternative Book Awards (FAB), were created to celebrate the best in alternative publishing. Today, the awards are called the CLMP Firecracker Awards. The CLMP says the awards "spotlight books and magazines making a sparkling contribution to our literary culture, and publishers striving to introduce important voices to readers far and wide."
