Abstract The activation entropy of dislocation glide, a key process controlling the strength of many metals, is often assumed to be constant or linked to enthalpy through the empirical Meyer-Neldel law-both of which are simplified approximations. In this study, we take a more direct approach by calculating the activation Gibbs energy for kink-pair nucleation on screw dislocations of two body-centered cubic metals, iron and tungsten.

Abstract Synthesizing distinct phases and controlling crystalline defects are key concepts in materials design. These approaches are often decoupled, with the former grounded in equilibrium thermodynamics and the latter in nonequilibrium kinetics.

Abstract The effect of finite-temperature magnetic excitations on the plasticity of body-centered cubic chromium is studied. In chromium, the magnetic order is disrupted by the 12〈111〉 Burgers vectors of dislocations, creating magnetic frustrations partially resolved through the generation of magnetic faults. These faults may bear consequences on plasticity, the controlling parameter being their energy.
