1 INTRODUCTION Calcium is an essential and tightly controlled second messenger, participating in a wide variety of cellular processes (Berridge et al., 2000). Occurring over a wide temporal and concentration dynamic range (Berridge et al., 2003), the termination of calcium signals requires efficient extrusion mechanisms from the cytosol into intracellular compartments and out of the cell.
