“The Dentist’s Son”—a short story
"A Women's World," Omar El Nagdi (detail). We run into each other outside the only public library in town. It is the cusp of summer, the crabapples flowering like a dusting of snow. Maybe it’s to finish her cigarette or maybe it’s the comfort of seeing another Muslim in a strange place, but she lingers in conversation and I do too. It’s almost like we’re back at the law faculty all those years ago, before she dropped out. I shift the box of paperbacks awkwardly, from under one arm to the other.
Who gets to eat healthy?
In the opening scene of the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding, the cool, blond girls mock the main character for bringing her homemade Greek food in a plastic container for lunch. “Moose caca” they mock, when she tells them it’s Moussaka. As a child of immigrants who often brought thermoses of leftovers to lunch, I knew the lines of social status were drawn with the contents of our lunch boxes.

Not again, I think. That is, until I reread the first sentence a few times. A car attack left four family members dead and one child in hospital. Four people dead. Confusion. Four people murdered. Anger. A family attacked. Within hours of the news, the activity in my group chat ramps up.
