1 INTRODUCTION In Europe, nemacheilid loaches comprise two genera, Barbatula Linck, 1790, and Oxynoemacheilus (Banarescu & Nalbant, 1966). Stone loaches of the genus Barbatula are very common throughout Europe and northern Asia, from the Mediterranean basin in Spain to Japan and the eastern parts of Siberia (Kottelat & Freyhof, 2007).
