Defining ‘country’ A starting point for class discussion should be how to define ‘country’. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the definition of ‘Country’ (note the capitalisation) is very different to the thinking employed by Anglo-Australians. According to the AIATSIS website, it describes the lands and waters to which First Nations peoples are connected through ancestry, while also incorporating thinking about (among other things) law, language and identity.
