We are writing to address the comments made by Dr. O’Reilly in his Correspondence. (1) We agree that careful terminology matters when discussing dissolved organics at petroleum release sites. However, his comments do not address the objective of our manuscript: to evaluate the extraction selectivity of liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) and solid-phase extraction (SPE) using analytical techniques for complex mixtures.

Natural Source Zone Depletion of Crude Oil in the Subsurface: Processes Controlling Mass Losses of Individual Compounds
1 Introduction Monitored natural attenuation has been widely adopted in the USA for remediation and risk-based management of groundwater contamination from petroleum hydrocarbon spills (EPA, 1995). However, a retrospective study of 133 closed leaking underground fuel tank sites in Wisconsin indicated that at least 25% of closed sites still had light nonaqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) in place and that groundwater contamination is persisting for longer than expected (Evanson et al., 2009).
