Late Miocene capybara in the Atacama Desert reveals a wetter climate and a transcontinental dispersal pathway

Abstract We report the oldest record of a capybara (Caviidae: Hydrochoerinae) in Chile, dated at ca. 8.8 Ma, which along with paleobotanical proxy records, indicates a markedly wetter late Miocene Atacama Desert. Today hyperarid, the Atacama contrasts sharply with the semiaquatic ecology of capybaras, which are restricted to perennial wetlands east of the Andes.

Abstract As the world’s longest active volcanic arc, the Andes deliver nutrient-rich volcanic ash directly to the ocean via atmospheric transport. This ash supplies key limiting nutrients to the Humboldt Current and the Southern Ocean, both critical for biological productivity, nutrient cycling, and atmospheric carbon dioxide drawdown. During the Late Miocene, massive explosive eruptions generated large ash fluxes that were deposited in the surrounding oceans.
