We verified that Type A was by far the dominant morphotype along the studied Mediterranean transect ( Fig 4 ), as in [ 49 , 60 , 69 ]. The concomitance of high Type B/C percentages and of low average coccolith mass values in the Atlantic-Gibraltar province is likely not a coincidence: Type B/C is typically less calcified than Type A. Still, the Spearman analysis did not reveal any significant correlation between coccolith mass and the percentage of Type A coccospheres with respect to the total E.
