Animal welfare deserts: human and nonhuman animal inequities
Introduction Residents of distressed areas of inner cities have been found to have less access to many of life’s necessities and amenities than their more well-off counterparts. Scholars have identified health care and pharmacy deserts in poor and minority areas leaving low-income residents with little access to physicians, hospitals, nursing homes, and pharmacies—particularly national chain pharmacies—which are needed to access both medication and primary care (2–5).
