Association between continued metformin use during hospital admission and hospital‐acquired complications

What is already known? In some countries, it is usual practice to continue non-insulin anti-hyperglycaemic agents during a hospital admission unless there are clear contraindications; however, there is limited safety data to support the continuation of metformin. What this study has found? We found that people who were continued on metformin had a lower risk for a hospital-acquired complication as compared to a matched control group free of diabetes. There was a low rate of hypoglycaemia.
