Sclerostin, Osteocytes, and Wnt Signaling in Pediatric Renal Osteodystrophy
1. Introduction Renal osteodystrophy (ROD) is a complex disorder of bone and mineral metabolism that affects virtually all pediatric patients with CKD. ROD is associated with adverse clinical outcomes that include bone loss, skeletal deformities, abnormal bone mineralization, and an increased risk of fractures and cardiovascular events [1]. These adverse effects have long-lasting consequences that persist into adulthood and contribute to the markedly reduced life expectancy of children with CKD.
