Abstract Background The control of gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) of cattle in pasture-based production systems such as Ireland is highly dependent on the availability of efficacious anthelmintics. There is very little information available on the efficacy of the broad-spectrum anthelmintics against GIN of cattle in Ireland and the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of anthelmintic resistance on dairy calf to beef farms.

Genetic basis of benzimidazole resistance in Teladorsagia circumcincta in Ireland

Knowledge of the mechanisms contributing to AR can help inform strategies designed to control the development and spread of AR. While BZ resistance among ovine nematodes in Ireland is considered common [1–3], information regarding the polymorphisms associated with BZ resistance in Ireland has been lacking. Previous studies indicated Teladorsagia spp., Cooperia spp. and Trichostrongylus spp., as the predominant BZ resistance genera [1]. The results of this study are in agreement with these findings.

A nationwide survey of anthelmintic treatment failure on sheep farms in Ireland

Approximately 10% of sheep producers in Ireland [20] participated in the STAP drench test task. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the largest field survey investigating anthelmintic inefficacy in the world to date and provides some baseline valuable data on treatment failure in Irish flocks.
