1 Introduction Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a type of head and neck cancer that occurs in almost all parts of the world, with the majority of cases found in South East Asia. It is well-known that Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) infection is crucial for NPC tumorigenesis. Over the last few decades, more than 80 immortalized NPC cell lines have been established, serving as valuable tools for research in NPC.

As in our patient, neutropenia and neutrophilic dysfunction are characteristic findings in patients with GSD-Ib leading to an increased risk of infectious diseases. Some of the molecular mechanisms underlying the neutrophilic dysfunctions in patients with GSD-Ib were unraveled by Kim et al. [3]. For instance, neutrophil granulocytes exhibit impaired respiratory burst as well as impaired chemotaxis and calcium flux.
