1 Introduction Human papilloma virus (HPV) is a small, non-enveloped DNA virus capable of infecting the skin or mucous membranes. In most cases, the infection is cleared by the immune system. However, exposure to HPV can lead to persistent infection which, if left untreated, can progress to cancer. Clearance is T-cell mediated, and individuals with impaired cellular immunity have a higher risk of cancer development.
