At the end of the 19th century, Colegrove, headed by the interest to grasp ‘the abiding character of a vivid experience’ (1899, p. 247), conducted a pioneering study on human memory: he asked 179 Americans to recall where they were when President Lincoln was assassinated and found that most participants (71%) could retain vivid and specific memories of the personal context in which they learned the news 30 years before.
