Indications for macular buckle in myopic traction maculopathy based on MTM staging system: a systematic review - Eye

Abstract Myopic traction maculopathy (MTM) affects around 30% of patients with pathologic myopia and is responsible for a high proportion of legal blindness cases in myopic population. The main surgical solutions to MTM are macular buckling (MB) ab-externo surgery and pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) ab-interno surgery. The recently proposed MTM staging system (MSS) provides a new classification of the condition based on evolutive changes occurring in the natural course of the disease.

1. Introduction Myopic traction maculopathy (MTM) affects 20% of eyes with pathologic myopia (PM) [1,2]. The MTM Staging System (MSS), published in 2020, describes the nomenclature of MTM as well as a proposal of pathogenesis, natural evolution, and prognosis [3]. The MSS has been internationally validated [4]. The MSS is summarized in Figure 1.
