A scoping review approach was chosen due to the broad nature of our research question. ‘Scoping reviews are helpful when the literature in an area is complex and heterogeneous and is not amenable to a more precise systematic review of the evidence’ [34, 35]. It is an ideal tool to determine the scope or coverage of a body of literature on a given topic and clearly indicate the volume of literature and studies available as well as an overview (broad or detailed) of its focus [40].
