Fatal acute clinical babesiosis in an adult gelding pony living in an endemic area
INTRODUCTION Babesia caballi and Theileria equi are haemoprotozoan parasites responsible for equine piroplasmosis. Equine piroplasmosis is endemic in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions and the overall prevalence in Europe is estimated to be 2% and 25% for B. caballi and T. equi, respectively (Nadal et al., 2022). In the Camargue region in the south of France, a prevalence of 6.3% and 68.6% for B. caballi and T. equi, respectively, has recently been demonstrated (Rocafort-Ferrer et al., 2022).
