First clinical evaluation A 44-year-old Italian woman experienced an episode of acute respiratory failure with respiratory acidosis, not owing to impaired gas exchange caused by damaged lung parenchyma (pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), emphysema, and similar conditions were excluded by instrumental and laboratory analysis), requiring admission to the intensive care unit and invasive ventilation via tracheostomy.

INTRODUCTION In the last decades, mitochondrial dysfunction has emerged as a pathological hallmark of several neurodegenerative conditions, including Parkinson's disease (PD) [1], Alzheimer's disease (AD) [2] and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) [3]. Several mechanisms of interaction between mitochondrial damage and neurodegeneration have been hypothesized.
