1. Introduction Efficient parasites have the ability to strike a balance between maximal exploitation of host resources and rapid reproduction and transmission. Indeed, parasites are often prolific reproducers that have evolved strategies to evade or suppress the host immune system [1,2]. Myxozoans are a large group of microscopic obligate endoparasites that have recently been placed within the phylum Cnidaria, alongside corals, sea anemones, jellyfish, and hydroids (reviewed by [3].
