In healthy relationships, there's nothing more vital than good communication skills, and couples who can communicate effectively know how to do one thing: listen. I just finished Adam Grant’s Ted Talk on The Power of Powerless Communication, where he cited two commanding points. Grant said tentative language engages trust and brings people toward you instead of away. He also reminded us what Steven Covey said about how most of us don’t listen with the intent to understand.

Couples therapy and marriage counseling can significantly help to improve the quality of relationships, but before you and your partner pick up the phone, there are a few things you need to know first. The frequency with which inquiries show up in my practice for couples therapy is far greater than before. I receive calls daily from all kinds of couples with all sorts of struggles both in and out of the bedroom.
