The Smiles-type rearrangement of substrates containing the combination of electron-poor aromatic rings with alkyl groups activated by adjacent electron-withdrawing functionalities is a simple strategy to create C(sp3)–C(sp2) bonds without the need for metal catalysis. (1,2) Recently, this approach was applied for the synthesis of different heterocyclic scaffolds from various N-substituted nitrobenzenesulfonamides.
