1 Introduction Running waters are under multiple anthropogenic pressures, mainly due to the deterioration of water quality, morphological degradation, flow regulation, water abstraction and agricultural runoff (Allan 2004). They are also experiencing gradual alterations in precipitation, rising temperature and evapotranspiration (Johnson et al. 2024). Even in humid climates, this increasingly leads to dry episodes where surface flows completely cease in smaller streams (Mimeau et al. 2025).
