Pivotal temperature is not for everyone: Evidence for temperature‐dependent sex determination in three gecko species
1 INTRODUCTION Sex determination is a crucial event in an organism's life. The variability in sex-determination systems is hence surprising. In amniotes, we can find two modes of sex determination: environmental sex determination (ESD) and genotypic sex determination (GSD). Species with ESD lack stable genomic differences between sexes and their sex ratios at hatching often depart from the canonical 50:50 ratio typical for GSD (Bókony et al., 2019; Fisher, 1930).
