Addressing the childhood cancer crisis in sub-Saharan Africa
Sub-Saharan Africa is facing an under-recognised burden of cancer and substantial failures in its oncology care systems. Deficiencies in care are pronounced for children with cancer, partly due to low prioritisation, with foundational issues exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2018, WHO launched the Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer , with the aim of reaching 60% survival for children with cancer aged 0–19 years by 2030.
