Abstract Geography as an academic discipline has historically been male dominated, with no or few women students and faculty until the early 1990s and few female chairs. We examine the status of women in PhD-granting geography departments from 1969 to 2019, focusing on gender, rank, and departmental leadership. Also, we analyze recent data for all geography programs using the American Association of Geographers (AAG) Guide to Geography Programs and an AAG database of community colleges.

Abstract Women and underrepresented groups in higher education face persistent barriers stemming from harassment, discrimination, and bias. This article examines gender and other inequities in higher education to highlight how these issues create a hostile climate for women and marginalized groups in the discipline of geography. Our analysis is grounded in a feminist conceptual framework and stress process theory and draws from survey data collected by the Status of Women in Geography Project.

Abstract Presidents of the American Association of Geographers (AAG) play crucial roles in the direction and health of the organization and the field of geography. The social and academic backgrounds of these leaders often influence the initiatives and priorities they implement during their tenure as president. During its 119-year history, only eighteen AAG presidents were women.
