Spontaneous reassociation of dispersed adult rat pancreatic islet cells into aggregates with three-dimensional architecture typical of native islets . Diabetes 36, 783–790 (1987). The fact that dispersed adult islet cells can reaggregate in a nonrandom fashion to form islets with architecture typical of intact islets indicates that the signals needed for islet compaction are intrinsic to the islet cells and are still expressed in adult life.
