Low anterior resection syndrome, commonly known as LARS, is a significant and often under-recognised consequence of sphincter-preserving rectal cancer surgery. It includes a range of bowel symptoms such as faecal urgency, incontinence, increased stool frequency, clustering, incomplete emptying and unpredictable bowel function.
