The eagle weighed far more than I expected. I remember thinking: What a life this must be — wandering across Mongolia’s endless landscapes with a golden eagle riding beside you. Perched on horseback high in Mongolia’s far west, I steadied my gloved arm as the golden eagle shifted its immense body weight against me, its talons gripping tightly through the leather. Then it spread its wings — nearly seven feet across — and for a moment the entire windswept valley seemed to stop moving.
