1 INTRODUCTION Ecologists have been fascinated with the recurrent periodicity and synchrony of Lepidopteran defoliators for decades (Berryman, 1996; Bjørnstad et al., 1999; Myers, 1988, 1998; Myers & Cory, 2013). Yet if forest insect populations cycled both regularly and synchronously, then forest resource managers would have little difficulty predicting the timing and severity of the next forest insect outbreak cycle.
