Joeun Kim Aatchim’s Layered Lines Summon Translucent Worlds
In Joeun Kim Aatchim’s paintings—butshe calls them drawings—everything is so vivid, yet so elusive. Her line feels definitive, yet the images they convey seem to fade away into sheer luminosity. Her works are typically painted using mineral pigment in shellac—sometimes with watercolor, pastel, or other materials—on layers of silk that, stretched across frames, show through to the wall behind.
The Critic’s Loves
Harold Bloom wrote and edited so many books that it’s hard to imagine how he found the time between them to write letters. Yet write letters he did, and just as whatever he read, he read seriously, whatever he wrote he wrote seriously. That’s something I can attest from personal experience: as a former student of his at Yale, a grad school dropout, I ventured to send him a copy of my first book of poems when it was published in 2003.
In the Reckless Hour
An irritating thing about reviewing books translated from languages you think you know is getting past the title. Did the translator get it right—not just the meaning but the tone? If not, then you are already biased against the whole enterprise—which is probably unfair, since the title, which is essentially a fragment cut off from any larger syntactic context, can be the hardest part of the whole book.
