Winter seed sowing is a fantastic way to take advantage of winter's chilly temperatures to help germinate seeds that require cold stratification. Some seeds need cold stratification to break dormancy, meaning they won't germinate until they have experienced a long period of freezing or near-freezing temperatures. There are cases where seeds may require multiple stratification periods to break dormancy.

Select the right garden mulch

Challenges in the garden are a regular part of growing plants. One of the most common issues in vegetable gardens and newly established beds is weeds. When weeds get a head start, they can quickly overpower your other plants. One of the most effective ways to drastically reduce weeding time is to use mulch. Covering the ground with mulch reduces the amount of light reaching the soil surface, which prevents or at least slows weed seed germination. Weed suppression isn't the only benefit.

Lead concerns for gardeners: Reducing health risk

Lead is part of the Earth’s crust and occurs naturally in small amounts in the soil. Soil can also be contaminated with lead from nearby industrial sites, disposal of lead-containing products, or past use of leaded gasoline and leaded household paints. Even the pesticides used in old fruit orchards contained lead. The amount of lead is generally highest in the top 3 inches of the undisturbed soil surface. Lead contamination is persistent, meaning it will stay in the soil for a long time.
