1. Introduction Worldwide, more than 300 million people suffer from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), of which up to 3 million die annually (1–3). In the Netherlands, almost 585,000 people are reported to suffer from this tobacco or air pollution-induced lung disease (4). Patients with COPD experience respiratory distress and often require hospitalization due to exacerbations, thereby reducing their quality of life and invoking significant healthcare costs (5, 6).
