1 Introduction Methane (CH4) is, after carbon dioxide (CO2), the second most important greenhouse gas globally. Its atmospheric concentration has risen from 729 ppb in 1750 to 1879 ppb in 2020, contributing 0.54 W m–2 and approximately 0.5ºC to climate warming (IPCC 2021; Lan et al. 2021).
