Introduction Cytokine-mediated immune responses are crucial in establishing systemic protection against a wide array of pathogens. Accordingly, type I interferons (IFN-Is) are crucial in fighting viral infections, but also serve major roles beyond antiviral immunity [1, 2]. Their power to fight invaders comes at the cost of risking IFN-I-related pathologies, such as observed during autoimmune diseases, during which IFN-I responses are dysregulated [3].
