Bart Pfankuch’s Biography

Bart Pfankuch has nearly 30 years of experience as a reporter, editor, writing coach and newsroom manager at outlets that include newspapers, magazines and an independent online news service in Wisconsin, Florida and South Dakota.

Bart currently serves as an investigative reporter for South Dakota News Watch, a non-partisan, non-profit public service journalism group. Prior to helping lead the launch of News Watch, Bart was executive editor of the Rapid City Journal, city editor at the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, vice president/editor for Rowland Publishing in Tallahassee, capital bureau reporter for the Florida Times-Union, city hall reporter at the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram and editor of the weekly Fitchburg Star in Wisconsin.

Bart is known for in-depth reporting on complex topics, clear and concise writing and multi-media journalism that includes databased storytelling, photography, broadcast writing and video production. Bart has presented on reporting and writing at numerous conferences and also writes a monthly coaching column, Better Writing with Bart, that is carried by a dozen state newspaper associations and appears in the National Newspaper Association bulletin.

Bart is known for his upbeat, positive leadership style and devotion to doing great work and improving the work of colleagues.
