1 INTRODUCTION Strategy research investigates the drivers of firm performance (Gavetti & Levinthal, 2004; Nag et al., 2007; Rumelt et al., 1994). Variance decomposition studies provide a key assessment (Avnimelech et al., 2025; Fitza & Tihanyi, 2017; Kumar et al., 2022; Mundt et al., 2022; Wang, 2023).

Designing modern AI in a way that makes it appear to have more agency could backfire by making people trust the technology less FROM virtual assistants to self-driving cars to medical imaging analysis, the use of modern artificial intelligence (AI) technologies based on deep-learning architectures has increased dramatically in recent years. But what makes us put our faith in such technologies to, say, get us safely to our destination without running off the road?

1 INTRODUCTION Strategic foresight—the ability to accurately predict the consequences of a strategic decision—is at the core of important strategy theories (Csaszar & Laureiro-Martínez, 2018; Gavetti & Menon, 2016; Kapoor & Wilde, 2023; Peterson & Wu, 2021).
