Time to Batten Down the Hatches
As I write this in mid-April, the S&P 500 Index is down 15% from its all-time peak in February, and fears of inflation, recession or both are daily topics. Tariff wrangling is center stage. There is uncertainty around what actions the Federal Reserve might take, and bank credit concerns are becoming more pronounced. Tomorrow, a social media post could swing expectations in a completely different direction. In short, we are in a season of high volatility.
Enterprise Risk Management Is About Managing Risk, Not Avoiding It (Part 2)
What are the basic concepts and guidelines for enterprise risk management? In the first part of this series, we established that enterprise risk management, or ERM, is a proactive and holistic process that helps bank managers understand, evaluate and establish risk positions that benefit their organizations. ERM covers more than compliance; it’s an integral part of strategy setting and decision making that creates performance and value for organizations.
Enterprise Risk Management Is About Managing Risk, Not Avoiding It
How should bankers and boards think about risk in an organization? Over the past two years, dramatic bank failures, declining profit margins and increased credit concerns have heightened the industry’s collective anxiety about risk. To clarify that risk and underline exposures, many have searched for short-term or isolated answers, viewing risk in the moment rather than proactively and broadly across their individual institutions and the industry.
Ghost Trap (2002) - MobyGames
Ghost Trap is a survival horror, similar in style, camera's views and controls to early Resident Evil games. The player controls a scientist, being with friends in a haunted house. He comes between different rooms, collects items and avoids ghosts. He has no gun, the only weapons are traps that are left on the ground. When ghost enters the trap, the player can destroy it.
Stellar Assault SS
Stellar Assault SS is a 3D space combat shooter and a sequel to Stellar Assault. Like in the first game, you also controls a space fighter in a series of battles against huge enemy ships, but this time the gameplay is more story-driven, with supporting characters and voice acting. Stellar Assault SS was released exclusively in Japan.
Mario Artist: Talent Studio
Description In Mario Artist: Talent Studio, the player can create their own characters in 3D, customizing features such as hair, skin, and eye color, voice, clothes, facial features, and body size and type. The process is similar to Nintendo's later Miis, but much more detailed. The characters can then be inserted into movies and animations. Events during these movies can be controlled by pressing the Z-trigger. Images from external video can be imported using the Capture Cartridge.
Chicken: Origami Invaders

Tomba! (1997) - MobyGames
The Good Or, at least, it is subjectively as it combines elements from RPGs into this compact, interconnected world of fantasy. The events are entertaining, the game is colourful ('psychedelic' would be a more accurate description), and the main character evolves along with the game.
Infinity (1999) - MobyGames
Tall: Infinity is an action puzzle game where the object is to build a tower by matching colored blocks. A block can be grabbed by standing on top of it and rolled in either direction. If the touching faces of two blocks share the same color when the block is released, they are matched and create more blocks for use in building the tower.
South Park (1998) - MobyGames
The Good The game has few good aspects. A 3D rendition of the opening sequence is one of them. The in-game one-liners by the boys is funny at first, but there are probably less than half a dozen of them therefore the same lines are often heard over and over again. The Bad The game has many faults. In the levels that take place outside, there is a white fog that makes it impossible to see past an estimated 100 in-game yards.
Looney Tunes (1992) - MobyGames
Description official description This side-scrolling game allows the player to control different Looney Tunes characters and their different abilities to advance through the levels, seven in all.

The King of Fighters 2002: Challenge to Ultimate Battle
Description official descriptions The second plotless "dream match" in The King of Fighters series, this game sports 39 normal characters and 5 hidden characters, some of whom haven't appeared since KOF98. The King of Fighters 2002 also has five characters exclusive to the X-Box, the PS2 and/or Dreamcast systems: Shingo Yabuki, King, Geese Howard, "Riot of the Blood" Iori and Leopold Goenitz.
Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense
Players Average score: 3.8 out of 5 (based on 21 ratings with 2 reviews) Even better than its predecessor. The Good Second Offense plays very much like its predecessor, but better. When you destroy an opposing vehicle, icons appear in the wreckage -- driving over these icons adds them to YOUR vehicle abilities, thus adding a sort of "experience meter" to the game. There are more secrets than before, and new and different special moves.
Daffy Duck: "Fowl Play"
In Daffy Duck: Fowl Play, Daffy is in search of a hidden treasure that Bugs Bunny told him about. Unfortunately, the rest of the Looney Tunes cast is out to stop him. Fowl Play is a nine-level platforming/action game with some unusual mechanics. Daffy has a hunger meter which he must keep filled. You must find food throughout the levels and always hurry lest Daffy starve.
Mario Artist: Paint Studio
Description Mario Artist: Paint Studio is an art program for the Nintendo 64DD. It is somewhat similar to the earlier game Mario Paint. The player can paint on a canvas using a variety of colors and tools using either a controller or the included mouse. Stamps can also be added in the form of official artwork from various Nintendo games. Images can also be imported from video tapes and the Game Boy Camera.
Klonoa: Door to Phantomile
The energy from dreams is collected in the Moon Kingdom where it is given substance. This rule was broken when Klonoa, a cat-like creature with wings on his ears, dreams that an airship crashes violently into a hill and a mysterious shadow hangs over the wreckage. When the dream comes true, Klonoa and his friend Huepow go to investigate. You take control of Klonoa as he travels through 12 levels of action. Klonoa will encounter a number of enemies who want to stop him.
Chickens on the Road
To play this game on PS5, your system may need to be updated to the latest system software. Although this game is playable on PS5, some features available on PS4 may be absent. See PlayStation.com/bc for more details. All the chickens escaped from the pen. Collect as many of them as possible. Avoid collisions with oncoming cars. Source: PlayStation Store Description
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
The Good Batman looks cool. Zip on everything else. The Bad The length of this game's a joke. It can be completed in under half an hour! Half an hour for a Nintendo 64 game? That's all kinds of pathetic right there, and the cut scenes are just slideshows from the movie it's based on.
Christmasville (2007) - MobyGames
The Good I did save Christmas... two or three weeks ago. Uhm, yeah, I know, saving Christmas in March, it's weird but as the game is free with ads on iWin, without the condition that it must be played at Christmas, why not? And then, it's a casual game and I'm not reviewing enough about them despite having already played a lot of them. Christmasville is one of the few games that gave me the will to write about it. Perhaps a Christmas wonder?
Hugo: The Quest for the Sunstones
Hugo: The Quest for the Sunstones is a 3D platform game similar to Crash Bandicoot both in graphics style and gameplay. Scylla and Don Croco have placed a giant boulder in the crater of a volcano - this puts the Kikurians and their village in danger. To thwart this evil plan, Hugo has to collect three magic Sunstones and place them in the right way. With the sun shining through them, the boulder can be destroyed and the Kikurians and their village can be saved.
LittleBigPlanet 3
LittleBigPlanet 3 is the third main game in the puzzle-platformer series and created by a different developer than the previous two. The game has an overarching story for the first time, with voiced supporting characters and cut-scene sequences, and it is set in Bunkum where the familiar Sackboy character meets Newton. He tricks Sackboy into unleashing three Titans, creatures that were locked up because they robbed the world of creativity.
Heart of Darkness
The Good Heart of Darkness is an excellent game, disregarding 3D accelerated graphics, complicated interfaces and all that mumbo-jumbo, Heart goes back to the basics and delivers a gaming experience based only on the ingenious and inventive machinations of these 2D gods that used to be Delphine soft. It truly is one of those cases when it's "so old, it's new" The story is inconsequential (which is unfortunate, see "the bad") but the gameplay is nothing but genius.
Disney Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion
'Disney Epic Mickey: Power Of Illusion' is a 2D action platformer and is a spin-off of the Epic Mickey series. It is a tribute to the Illusion series of Mickey Mouse games by Sega, and this game is mainly a tribute to 'Castle Of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse' for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis.
Fossil Fighters: Champions
A Bone to Pick In this dino-tastic adventure, players get some hands-on time to hunt and clean fossils, and revive and battle vivosaurs. A fossil park is hosting a large-scale tournament in which competitors enter vivosaurs created from dinosaur fossils into competition. Fossil Fighters from all over the world battle their vivosaurs against one another to find out who will be crowned champion. Players excavate and clean fossils.
AZ regulators should nix rate increase for Southwest Gas
Southwest Gas is asking for a second massive rate hike in just two years. The Arizona Corporation Commission should turn it down. It's the right thing to do for Arizonans, financially and morally. As religious leaders in Tucson, we work to mobilize people of faith and conscience to care for our common home and work for climate justice. We recognize the harm that fossil fuels like "natural" gas have wreaked on our environment, and we seek to accelerate a clean energy future.

Bart Smith: Forgo fast food to feast on local fare
I did not cry any tears over this week’s news that the short-lived Steak ‘N Shake franchise in Greeley closed. I have no personal animosity for that particular fast-food eatery; no tales of food poisoning or being turned away for not wearing proper attire, or of poor service. There was absolutely zero chance that I would ever experience that menu. It’s fast food in general that makes me queasy and takes away my appetite more quickly than an onslaught of intestinal bacteria.
Bart Smith: Is individual reusing and recycling worth the time?
How much difference can one individual make in helping the planet by reducing waste? I rarely visit oceans, so they are not top of mind when I think of how we damage the planet. However, from afar, photos of trash clogging oceans and beaches make me cringe. Regularly, news will be made when someone cuts open a seabird or fish to find it choked with plastic waste. There are beaches that are waist-deep for miles with washed up trash.
Bart Smith: Inspiration for aging well comes from unlikely places
Inspiration commonly comes from observing people who excel at something, who are at the top of their careers or vocations. Their personal scorecard of successes inspires us to stretch for the stars as well. However, inspiration for me lately has come from a more unlikely place and some unlikely people. They aren’t the fastest or strongest at my gym. They’re the slowest and physically weakest.
Bart Smith: Adjusting expectations on thirsty lawns
It was a combination of the shock of opening my mid-summer water bill and the frustration of coaxing my aging gasoline-powered lawn mower to life that caused me to look at my spacious blue-grass lawn in a new light. My conclusion: Too much lawn, too much maintenance, too much cost in power-raking, aerating, composting, fertilizing, weed-controlling — and don’t forget the mowing. I’m one of the holdouts on my block who still mows my own.
Bart Smith: Less litter and living longer go hand-in-hand
I tell myself it’s probably good for me as I bend all the way over to the ground and pick up a gross bit of trash. I’m reminded of a lesson in the book “The Blue Zones” about areas in the world where people live longer, healthier lives. One reason given for longevity is these groups get a lot more exercise than the rest of us.
Bart Smith: If you support your community, then support your newspaper
It wasn’t that long ago nearly everyone read their local newspaper. Now, it’s a struggle to keep paid circulation at a healthy level, and as more advertisers go in search of cheaper digital advertising, and readers prefer cell phones, some newspapers are closing and that’s a real shame. Yes, most newspapers now have active and popular websites that draw readers and advertising as well, but it’s just not the same. More competition means less revenue and consequently smaller newsroom staffs.
Greeley Tribune building purchased by High Plains Library District
The distinctive Greeley Tribune building on its own full city block will soon take on a new role as the home of the downtown branch of the High Plains Library District. The transaction was finalized Oct. 9. The Greeley Tribune staff, along with employees of The Fence Post weekly agriculture publication and Acres USA, a magazine, book publishing and events company focusing on regenerative agriculture, will relocate in Greeley. That location has yet to be finalized.
Smith: Randy Bangert was the best newspaper editor I’ve known
Everyone at some point experiences the realization someone they know will be a friend for life. No matter how far you are apart, you'll always stay in touch. It's a rare and wonderful feeling. I have known for a long time Randy Bangert and I would be life-long friends. Near the same age, with similar careers, sharing the good fortune we had found our life's calling, Randy and I were to grow old together.
Smith: It may not look like it, but meaningful long-term change is coming for gun rules
Hope no one is expecting anything too meaningful from the recent push to institute some additional gun control legislation. It just isn't going to happen with the current crop of legislators in the House and Senate and White House who are deeply beholden to the gun lobby's deep pockets and National Rifle Association membership. The NRA boasts 4 million members, although critics suggest this is widely exaggerated. For the sake of discussion, let's stick with the 4 million.
Smith: Job of press secretary looking better all the time
I'm warming up to the idea of applying for the job of White House press secretary. It could be a fun gig. Sean Spicer, or "Spicey" as we have lovingly come to know him, will step away from the duties of addressing the somewhat hostile press corps. A number of potential spokespeople have said they aren't interested in the job because it has been an excessively rough five months under the new administration and the raucous relationship with the news media.
Bart Smith: Arches National Park and Canyonlands visit reinforces need to protect public lands
We were deeply impressed last week at the dedication of some people to enjoy the spectacular view of Delicate Arch in Arches National Park in neighboring Utah. To get up close, visitors need to hike up a rather steep rock slope for a mile and a half, then circle around 200 yards on a narrow ledge with a sharp drop-off with no guard rails or handholds to help out. Then there's a little scramble at the top to a fairly steep bowl at the base of the arch itself.
Smith: Don’t kill Affordable Care Act without solutions
Many people are saying they are afraid of losing their health insurance if Obamacare is repealed. That makes me pause — where was this groundswell before the election? If indeed the number is anywhere near that estimated by the Congressional Budget Office and the Joint Committee on Taxation at 18 million — wouldn’t that have been enough to swing the election the other way?
Smith: Far too often, State Patrol officers are killed on side of road
Last week I looked forward with tremendous anticipation to today’s Christmas gathering with our daughters and other close family members at our home. We haven’t always been able to be together over the holidays so we really treasure the times that we can. Clouding some of that joy, however, is the knowledge that the family of fallen Colorado State Patrol Trooper Cody Donahue won’t get to be together.
Smith: A career of teaching kids is most meaningful
Early in our relationship I would tease my wife Judy about her job as a teacher — about her pay, about her time off, asking how hard could it be spending the day with little kids. I developed great barbs, of working in crayon and breaking for nap time, and for getting more time off in her 10 months of “actual” work than I got in a year. Turns out I was wrong on all counts.
Smith: Common sense says ‘rolling coal’ should be stopped
Admittedly, on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being very important and 1 not-so-much, regulating “rolling coal” this Colorado legislative session would earn a negative 5. Still, even with vastly more important issues at hand, legislators should have been able to do some common sense small stuff on lunch breaks. Not this time. Don’t be misled by the word coal. This has nothing to do with the coal industry getting slammed by regulation and having to compete with an over-abundance of clean natural gas.
Smith: Downtown conference center and hotel project a game-changer
Pardon the clichés, but the new conference center and hotel planned for downtown Greeley is a game-changer. It will give our fair city a sharp shove off the tipping point toward continued positive evolution and improved quality of life. Good things don’t come easy — and this is an excellent example since it is at least four years and a number of re-starts and disappointments in the making.
Column: Change inevitable with development
“Oilfield Trash” read the bumper sticker on a vehicle rolling through Greeley on a recent morning. If you envisioned an old truck with rust holes and beer cans rattling in the back, you would be wrong. I understood the sarcasm in the sign as I looked at the late model option-laden, Super Duty, double-cab Ford pickup that was worth more than twice what I paid for my sport sedan.
Smith: In shooting’s aftermath, all options should be on table
Days later, it is still difficult to absorb news coverage of the murder of 26 Connecticut first-graders and their teachers. Savagery of that intensity stretches comprehension. Now, as the kids’ funerals unfold, and we see the images of those innocent faces, the inevitable question floats in our minds of how we let them down, and how we as a nation can protect others like them, such as those gunned down in a Colorado theater.
