A couple years ago, Alexa and Siri got bad press when researchers uncovered that both voice assistants had their “favorite” accents. They used to have trouble understanding commands from Irish, Indian, and South African voices. Users would often hear “sorry, I don’t understand, could you repeat” answers, while those who had “typical” US and UK accents wouldn’t come across similar responses. This problem originated from using non-diverse voice datasets to train the voice assistants.
