Non-mannitol-fermenting Staphylococcus aureus strains: a new perspective on diagnostic challenge
Abstract Mannitol fermentation is a key marker for identifying Staphylococcus aureus on mannitol salt agar (MSA). However, strains lacking this ability may arise, causing diagnostic difficulties. This study aimed to characterize mannitol-negative S. aureus strains and evaluate their biochemical identification, antimicrobial resistance patterns, and molecular characteristics. 1. Introduction Fluoroquinolones are commonly used in antimicrobial treatment in both human and veterinary medicine worldwide because of their pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties [1]. As a consequence of their intense use, the quinolone resistance rate has increased considerably over the last few years. The main mechanism of quinolone resistance is the accumulation of mutations in the genes encoding the subunits of the drug’s target enzymes: DNA gyrase and DNA topoisomerase.
