Production of Sustainable Liquid Fuels
1. Introduction Transport fuels today make up 23% of all contributions to climate change [1], and the biggest contributors are light-duty vehicles, heavy trucks, and shipping. The global CO2 emissions by sector and transportation subsector is summarised in Figure 1. Biofuels have the potential to decarbonise these sectors, which is particularly important as they are much harder to decarbonise than other sectors, such as power [2].

Two-Stage Conversion of Used Cooking Oil to Biodiesel Using Ion Exchange Resins as Catalysts
1. Introduction Renewable energy has become an important alternative resource in many countries and is considered to be a potential substitute for conventional fossil fuels. In particular, renewable energy in the form of biodiesel is considered to be an alternative fuel for diesel engines as it is thought to slow the progression of climate change by reducing exhaust pollutants [1,2].
Steering the Aspects of MgO-Induced Structure Sensitivity in Cu-Based Catalysts for CO2-Rich Syngas Conversion to Dimethyl Ether: Cu/Zn Ratio and Lattice Parameters
The present work reports the crucial effect of the Cu/Zn ratio and MgO content (10–30%) on lattice parameters as well as the metal surface area of the co-precipitated Cu–ZnO–MgO/γ-Al2O3 bifunctional catalyst for direct dimethyl ether (DME) synthesis from CO2-rich syngas (H2/CO = 2). X-ray diffraction analysis of the as-synthesized catalysts showed a prominent structural identity belonging to the malachite–rosasite [(Cu,Zn)2(CO3)(OH)2] group of minerals.
(Hemi)cellulosic Lubricant Base Oils via Catalytic Coupling and Deoxygenation Pathways
(Hemi)cellulosic Lubricant Base Oils via Catalytic Coupling and Deoxygenation Pathways The past decade has witnessed a significant growth in bioproducts development due to the strong interest in creating a more diverse energy supply, environmental sustainability, and a carbon neutral bioeconomy.
Advances in Catalytic Production Processes of Bio-Derived Vinyl Monomers
Advances in Catalytic Production Processes of Bio-Derived Vinyl Monomers Kalpana Avasthi, Ashish Bohre, Miha Grilc, Blaž Likozar and Basudeb Saha Abstract Plastics industry technologies currently source the majority of monomers from crude oil substances.
Growth Kinetics of Humins Studied via X-Ray Scattering
Growth Kinetics of Humins Studied via X-Ray Scattering We use ultra-Small Angle X-ray Scattering (USAXS) to investigate the evolution of size, morphology, volume fraction and number concentration of humins formed during dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and the further polymerization of HMF between 80-95 °C in 1 M hydrochloric acidic solutions.
Ultrafast Flow Chemistry for the Acid-Catalyzed Conversion of Fructose
Ultrafast Flow Chemistry for the Acid-Catalyzed Conversion of Fructose Biomass conversion to chemicals and fuels has been epitomized by batch processing and long reaction times that limit the economic viability of future biorefineries and prevent modular manufacturing near the source-production site that is necessary due to the biomass’ large water content.
Catalytic Production of Renewable Lubricant Base-Oils from Bio-Based 2-Alkylfurans and Enals
Catalytic Production of Renewable Lubricant Base-Oils from Bio-Based 2-Alkylfurans and Enals Lubricants are an essential part of modern society with an over $146 billion market but have significant environmental footprint. Bio-based lubricant base-oils can offer performance advantages over existing oils and mitigate environmental challenges.

Selective Hydrodeoxygenation of Tartaric Acid to Succinic Acid
A novel one-step process for catalytic production of succinic acid from tartaric acid, largely available in the waste streams of wine making, is developed. A liquid-phase system comprised of molybdenum oxide catalyst supported on carbon black (MoOx/BC) and hydrobromic acid in acetic acid under a H2 atmosphere is effective for selective cleavage of C-O bonds of tartaric acid and selective hydrogenation of the resulting unsaturated carbons.
Towards high-yield lignin monomer production
Depolymerizing lignin into lignin monomers has been extensively studied as a pathway to valorize lignin biopolymer. However, low monomer yields and selectivities pose a significant disadvantage in process economics when technical lignins (refering to lignins separated or extracted from biomass pretreatment or fractionation) are used as feedstocks.
One-pot Integrated Processing of Biopolymers to Furfurals in Molten Salt Hydrate: Understanding Synergy in Acidity
Furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfual (HMF), promising renewable platforms for bio-products, manufacturing with high carbon efficiency is a challenge because of their undesired polymerization to humins. Here, we present an integrated process in inorganic salt solution to overcome this challenge. First, sugar biopolymers yield high monosaccharides (>90%) via efficient saccharification at low temperature.
Direct conversion of syngas to DME: Synthesis of new Cu-based hybrid catalyst using Fehling’s solution, elimination of calcination step.
A facile new method for the synthesis of nanostructured Cu2O-ZnO and Cu2O-ZnO-MgO catalysts has been described. The catalysts were physically admixed with ?-Al2O3 to form hybrid catalysts suitable for direct selective conversion of syngas to DME. The methanol synthesis component was synthesized from corresponding nitrate precursors using Fehling’s solution coupled with glucose oxidation assisted precipitation method.
Critical Design of Heterogeneous Catalysts for Biomass Valorization: Current Thrust and Emerging Prospects
Catalysis in heterogeneous phase plays a crucial role in valorization of biorenewable substrates with controlled reactivity, efficient mechanical process separation, greater recyclability and minimization of environmental effects. In this minireview, we have critically analyzed the design aspects of the catalysts of multifunctional properties in making biomass conversion processes more productive and sustainable.
Pt Catalysts for Efficient Aerobic Oxidation of Glucose to Glucaric Acid in Water
Glucaric acid, a promising bio-based chemical for the production of adipic acid, is produced on a commercial Pt/C catalyst via aerobic oxidation of glucose in water. Facile oxidation of gluconic acid, an intermediate oxidation product of glucose, at optimal conditions of 80 C, 13.8 bar O2 and a glucose/Pt molar ratio of 54, enabled a maximum glucaric acid yield of 74%, the highest yield reported to date.
