@Voice_of_Jiminy @Bollox17Jason I'd have to check, but I think the Open Cup winner has been considered the national champion since the Open Cup started, roughly 80 years before MLS was formed. I think @soccermavn would know. Note that the old NASL teams ignored the Open Cup.

I haven't applied for an award this century. That's not why I do this. I won some internal awards at the News & Record and USA TODAY, which I appreciate because that was recognition from my peers.
