Beaver update - their first spring at Delta Pit
support our work Wilder Future Fund Our wetlands need you Our three counties are at the heart of an opportunity to restore wetlands. The UK has lost 90% of these wonderful habitats – wetlands now cover only 3% of the landscape in the UK, but they are host to 10% of UK species. Wetlands are frontline defenders against climate change too, including protection against flooding.

How are the beavers settling in?
The release went smoothly and within an hour of arriving on site the Beavers had left their crates, swam into the water and started exploring their new home. We had built an artificial lodge to provide them with shelter during the first few days and put out food, parsnips and sweet potatoes, to supplement the abundant willow We then left them in peace to get to know their new surroundings.
The Homeworker: 'Homeworking doesn't equate to alone-working'
There are some common misconceptions about what it means to be a homeworker. It’s lonely. You’re by yourself, going it alone. It’s not a steady or reliable income. You’re always working and can never switch off. There’s no support if something goes wrong. It’s a pre-retirement job for a bit of extra income. You’re just in it for the perks. You don’t really know what you’re doing. Some of these come from those on the outside looking in who might be considering homeworking for themselves.
The Role of Data Storage in Accelerating Time to Insights
This blog on the role of data storage originally appeared on BernardMarr.com. It has been republished with the author’s credit and consent. When it comes to data and analytics, time is money. According to research by IDC, 75% of business decision-makers believe data loses its value within days. This leaves organizations racing to find valuable, actionable insights before their information goes stale.
Minimize the Impact of a Cyberattack with Commvault and Pure Storage
We’re pleased to announce a new integration of Pure Storage® FlashBlade//S™ and FlashBlade//E™ with Commvault to introduce S3 Object Lock. Together with Pure’s SafeMode™ retention lock, this creates a resilient multilayered protection to safeguard against ransomware data destruction or encryption of backups.
FlashBlade S3 and ElasticSearch: The Journey to Disaggregation
As data continues its inevitable upward growth, the focus on separation of compute and storage becomes an increasingly important part of scale-out applications. Scaling compute separate from storage creates opportunities for more tailored budget spend and more flexible designs based on use case requirements.
Choose Your Path with Simplified Release Lines
Pure Storage was once a startup. We’ve grown substantially since our founding in 2009. For the longest time, we were singularly focused on building the Purity Operating Environment for FlashArray™. As fast as possible, iterate. New features. Bug fixes. Over and over. We manufacture what is considered the heart of the data center. No point in blazing-fast CPUs or humanity-threatening AI when you can’t store any data.
National Coding Week: Upskill Your Coding Knowledge with Pure Storage
The Pure Storage team is always here to help you access the information and resources you need to get the most out of your Pure Storage products. In addition to the Pure PEAK Program, our experts regularly share content—coding included—in the Purely Technical category of our blog. It’s National Coding Week, which is a perfect opportunity to share some of the resources from our community of developers and engineers.
Bringing Data Analytics into the Hardware Design Story
When a FlashArray™ or FlashBlade® device ships for the first time, it’s a proud and exciting moment for all of us in engineering. There are celebrations and fanfare, handshakes and shouts. And then, with (metaphorical) tears in our eyes, we bid the product a fond farewell—wishing it well like a dear friend about to head off on the data analytics journey of a lifetime. Of course, this customer shipment is far from the end of that box’s story.

Pure Storage: DirectCompress Accelerator Packs More Data into FlashArray//XL
By Ben Casey, account executive, Pure storage, Inc. Like many gamers, I used to build my own systems. I loved picking out the CPU, the video card, which ISA-based modem (that’s a real thing) I was going to use, and why. You could spend your money on precisely what you wanted whether that was more money on graphics for games or a faster modem for getting online. Or maybe, it was all about the sound card.
How Entertainment Changed Over Time in Last 5 Years
What is created and what gets popular are impacted mainly by the preferences of people at the moment, as well as what is socially acceptable. The current status of technology is an additional factor to take into account. These changes affect the music, television, and movies that we consume. When seen in the context of a decade’s entertainment, the shifts may have seemed inconsequential at the time, but looking back, we can see they were somewhat significant.

Letter: An epiphany
Ben Casey, Arapahoe Epiphany, a moment of sudden revelation or insight. The nation’s intelligence professionals provided what should be an epiphany for American citizens on January 6, according to scriptures, the Day of Epiphany. Americans were told that Vladimir Putin did himself order the cyber attacks on the campaign of Hillary Clinton. The President Elect and his allies remained focused on the surmise that no ballot boxes were compromised. They were most definitely compromised.
Letter: No thumbs
Ben Casey, Arapahoe I have been back and forth across the Neuse so much lately attempting to finish interviews for the book Sound People, I have been awarded Frequent Floater Miles. I share a profound incident from a recent trip for which I am truly thankful. I regard this observation as a defining moment for civilization. Sitting in my F-150 pick ’em up behind a Swedish station wagon, I noticed the driver exited his vehicle and walked to the bow. Not unusual.

Letter: What Election ‘16 says about us
Ben Casey For those seeking logic in an illogical election cycle, the Sun Journal’s editorial page on Sunday, Oct. 30 offered a logical guide for exercising logic in the voting booth. The commentary by Sun Journal editor Randy Foster was an impartial assessment of the challenge voters face when trying to choose wisely for the common good of all Americans. Returning from Wilmington on Sunday, Nov. 6, when the signal for Public Radio East faded, I scanned the airwaves to pick up another station.

Education - Opinion - New Bern Sun Journal - New Bern, NC
The sky is falling. No doubt. Not because Hermine’s clouds met terra firm, but instead, because Otis Gardner wrote a column I was able to read in its entirety and agree with wholeheartedly. The most profound statement he made paraphrases an observation I have made over and over. The political disgrace facing the nation that is heralded as the leader of the free world is, in part, a result of the failure of American education.
Letter: Heard any good ones lately?
I heard one on NPR Monday. The reporter asked someone who was scheduled to speak at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday evening about unity in the GOP. The presumed speaker for Tuesday evening said that the party was extraordinarily unified. I managed not to have a wreck while laughing so hard. That was about as credible as a Democrat saying that Hillary has no credibility issues.
Letter: American education
The failure of American education has produced a Republican candidate for president who had significant trouble understanding the negative consequences of being endorsed by David Duke. He also has expressed some dismay that mainstream faithful Muslims have not spoken out opposing what he calls radical Islamic terrorism.
Ben Casey: Cultural traits are not so memorable
From an acknowledged curmudgeon's perspective, how a culture celebrates holidays could be a way to define that culture.
