John Clarke, known to thousands of ABC radio listeners as "Stinker", has survived a harrowing ordeal in rough seas north of Newcastle. The 77-year-old took his boat, Stinkpot, fishing near Fingal Bay lighthouse late on Wednesday afternoon. The experienced angler was pulling up his anchor when a wave hit the tinnie, causing it to capsize and smash into rocks.

Two brothers have been refused bail after allegedly participating in a riot in Newcastle, riding recklessly through the city streets and attempting to evade police. About 200 people gathered at Dangar Park in Mayfield on June 14 for a clothing giveaway event for Australian streetwear brand Bad Apples. The event quickly descended into chaos, with videos showing an additional 50 people riding dirt bikes, taunting police, appearing to run down at least two pedestrians, and damaging a park.

Animal rescuers across New South Wales say they're struggling to cope with a surge in surrendered cats, warning legislative gaps are fuelling a growing stray "crisis". Peta Smith, president of the Hunter Valley Animal Facility and Rehoming Centre, said her organisation was one of many under increasing pressure as surrender rates climbed. Over the past two years, Ms Smith has seen a sharp increase in cats being dropped off at the centre, often after being turned away from local pounds.
